Samsung S2 and S3 MP3 players: Yawnorama

Category:  Personal Technology

Samsung has lifted the lid on its two newest MP3 players, the pebble-esque S2 and the really-what's-the-point S3. The S2 is the most interesting, as, despite being far from a new idea in the MP3 world, is a new direction in the Samsung world. It's taking aim at the iPod shuffle and Creative's lovely Zen Stone line, with 1GB of storage, an FM radio and support for MP3, WMA and OGG music formats.

The S3 is just another run-of-the-mill player with 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of memory, a 240x320-pixel display, support for MP3, OGG and WMA music formats, MPEG-4 video, an FM radio, 30 hours of battery life, and flash games, and it comes in a range of colours. It's pretty much a Samsung T10/P2, only without the Bluetooth and touchscreens, and for that reason we're not even remotely excited.

We're fond of Samsung's players for sure, and the P2 really is a nice bit of kit. We just can't help but think the S3 is uninventive and too 2007 for the middle of 2008. Samsung needs to innovate in this field, or at least bring something less commonly seen to the market, like massive amounts of flash memory or Wi-Fi connectivity.

Naturally, we'll still give both players due respect when we review them. We're still waiting to hear back from Samsung regarding UK price and availability, but you can expect more news as soon as we get word. Word. -Nate Lanxon
