Google NZ Explains
Category: Google Adsense
Nothing's sacred in Googledom (May 2) overstates the "personalised data'' provided to search engines.
When someone uses Google or another search engine, a server log is created, which includes the IP address of the computer making the request.
We have no way of knowing who sits behind that address. We don't seek or collect personal information.
We retain these server logs solely to improve our search services, to fight web spam and to comply with legal obligations.
The authors confuse our popular AdSense and AdWords programs. Neither AdWords (by which advertisers can bid for "sponsored links'' adjacent to search results), nor AdSense (enabling web publishers to earn money from "Ads by Google'' on their website), has any connection with a user's search history or past server logs. Further, the Google search engine doesn't use "behavioural targeting''.
In 2007, Google took the industry lead in agreeing to anonymise server logs after 18 months and reduce cookie life to two years.
We recognise our continued success is based on users' trust. Our competitors are only ever one click away.
Accordingly, we are firmly committed to protecting and defending our users' privacy.
