US slowing economy is not a threat to leading brands' e-commerce business - study

A survey shows that in spite of the decline in consumer spending, 48 percent of leading brands believe that the slowing economy in the US does not significantly affect their e-commerce business and 22 percent believe that the slowing US economy might have a positive impact that could lead to an increase in e-commerce.
All respondents to the survey reported annual web sales of at least USD 10 million. 58 percent of participants reported annual web sales of USD 100 million or more, while 26 percent reported annual Web sales of over USD 1 billion. 96 percent of respondents have decided to maintain or even increase their level of investment in e-commerce strategies or tools, while 4 percent would invest less in e-commerce in order to concentrate on other marketing and sales channels.
Data was provided by e-commerce platform ATG. The survey was conducted at ATG's annual user conference ATG Insight Live 2008. It collected data from representatives of more than 50 ATG partners from industries ranging from retail, media and entertainment, financial services and insurance, telecommunications, consumer product manufacturing ,healthcare, and technology consulting.
