Open Question: internet connection won’t work!! Desperate situation!?

My internet has been out for 4 months now. I don't know what the problem is. I think I have done EVERYTHING!! I have broadband and the internet is only out on one computer (I am using my laptop WITH the internet and am actually right next to the other computer) but I have no clue what to do. I think it might be the broadband connection, though my isp (whatever that is..) is connected to aol and when it connects to aol, it says it can't be reached or whatever! I don't think I have aol on my computer anymore! The computer is a dell, I got it in January 2005. It is not hooked up to the phone line, what ever that means (I guess it's cable). The modem and router I guess are fine, other comps are hooked up to them and work. Oh and when I try to repair the connection, it can't renew the IP address, whatever that is, if that helps. This is all very confusing to me! Best answer for anything that works, I doubt it will, but it's worth a shot!! I am asking this question through my laptop, it says it in the question :o)
