Anti-spam Group Draws up Guidelines for ISPs

A set of guidelines is being drawn up that could help internet service providers (ISPs) curb spam sent from botnets, it has emerged.
The Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) drew up the best practice rules at a meeting in Germany last week, reports PC World.
ISPs could soon implement automated tools that block forwarded emails, if a large volume of messages has passed through their mail servers, by distinguishing the servers that receive email and those that forward email.
MAAWG also discussed solutions to the problem of botnets - networks of spam-infected computers that send spam via port 25 directly onto the web.
While ISPs could block all computers on dynamic IP addresses that send emails outside their networks on port 25, not all providers are able to follow this route.
As an alternative, the organisation recommends that ISPs share details of their dynamic address space to help other service providers hone their spam filters.
According to MAAWG, it is the only organisation that views the problem of spam "holistically".
