NCATS: Gremlins find Home Hardware Chevy

Don Thomson Jr. and the Home Hardware Chevrolet continued to prove that they have perhaps the fastest race car in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS).� Yet once again this past weekend during round four of the series at the Autodrome St. Eustache, a team that showed their power and promise all day was hampered by mechanical misfortune.

From the beginning of the practice session the Home Hardware Chevy was posting times that were the envy of other competitors.� Thomson would claim pole position for the third time in four races this season with a lap of 17.219 seconds for an average speed of 83.629mph.

From the drop of the green flag Thomson continued his domination leading the first 70 laps of the race.� As competitors cycled through their scheduled pit stops Thomson would surrender the lead but regain it on two more occasions.� Past the halfway point of the 250 lap event and looking towards the finish, the Home Hardware Chevy began to slow following a race restart.

Reacting quickly Thomson made an attempt to rectify the problem however the challenge was significant.� “We melted the pick up wires that run to the distributor.� It’s a problem we had last week at Barrie and I switched boxes and finished the race.� Unfortunately this week after doing the same thing the second box eventually burned up, it’s a tough break the car was pretty good”.� Despite the setback, the Home Hardware crew worked feverishly to make repairs and return Thomson to the race.� He would be classified seventeenth at the end of the night.

If not for the part failure, Thomson was surely destined for a podium finish at worst.� “The car was good, it took about three or four laps to come in, but once it did we had a good car”.��

Despite the disappointing finish Thomson sits second in the overall driver standings.

The 2008 NCATS schedule has expanded to thirteen events this year run on ovals, road courses and temporary street circuits across Canada.� The next event will begin a swing through Western Canada with a stop at Sun Valley Speedway near Vernon, BC on Saturday July 19th.� You can watch all thirteen races this season on TSN.� For information about the NCATS including schedule, results and more, log onto www.nascar.ca
