Hardware store hopes to open at shopping center

The city's Planning Board will hear about a proposal Monday that would help clear the way for Orchard Supply Hardware to open at Alameda Towne Centre.
If the plan goes forward, the hardware company would open at the building that once housed Safeway.
The major design review that will go before the board calls for adding decorative parapets to the building's east side and installing loading docks on the north side. The building's height would increase 35 feet.
An outdoor garden supply area would be created on the north side, according to city documents.
The effort to bring in Orchard Supply Hardware to the center comes as part of a drive by Harsch Investment Properties — which owns the shopping center — to increase the number of "anchor" businesses as part of revamping the site.
Among the anchor businesses already open are Trader Joe's and Borders bookstore, as well as Safeway, which moved to another location after vacating 2130 South Shore Center, the site where Orchard intends to open.
Harsch also was working toward having a Target store at the center. But the plan fell through last year after meeting opposition from nearby residents who felt the store would be too big and cause traffic congestion. If Orchard Supply Hardware wins approval, it would join a handful of other hardware supply businesses on the Island.
The others are Encinal Hardware on Encinal Avenue and Pagano's Ace Hardware on Lincoln Avenue, as well as Alameda's Vosburgh True Value Hardware on Santa Clara Avenue.
