Search Expired Domain Names
Category: Domain Names
Before beginning to search expired domain names for your perfect domain name, you need to understand the domain name expiration process . A domain name is not available to the general public on the day of expiration. There is a sequence of events that must be followed to safeguard the original domain name owner. This is known as the “domain name drop cycle”.
The drop cycle gives the original owner of the domain name approximately
60 days to renew the registration before the name is entered back into the marketplace. After the 30 day grace period and the 30 day redemption period, the domain name can no longer be renewed. It is placed into pending delete for 5 days after which it is released or “dropped” back into the marketplace.
On average, 30,000 domain names re-enter the marketplace on a daily basis. The majority of these names will re-enter the marketplace as available domain names through the registrars. The domain names that have backorders placed or appear to the registrars to have higher values, will go up for auction and sell to the highest bidder.
In order to “catch” one of these dropped names you must place a backorder with one or more of the major “drop catchers”. Drop catchers capture domain names from several of the top domain name registrars. The top three drop catching companies are; NameJet.com , SnapNames.com and Pool.com . Each site has different terms and conditions that you must read and agree to, but they all pretty much so work the same.
The first step is to search expired domain names at each site to see what names are becoming available. If you find a name that you want simply place a backorder for that domain name. There is no cost to place a backorder if you do not receive the name. It is best to place a backorder at all three companies because they do compete for domain names. This is just a way to increase your odds of catching the name you want.
If you are lucky and no one else has placed a backorder on the name, the name becomes yours at the backorder price, usually around $60 to $70. If others have placed a backorder on the domain name it will be put up for auction. This is customarily a three day private auction open only to those whom previously backordered the domain name. The winner of the auction receives the name.
Another great place to search expired domain names is GoDaddy’s Domain Name Aftermarket . They are not considered to be a drop catcher, however they do allow backorders and offer a large number of expired domain names previously registered at GoDaddy.
As of October 2007 there were 146 million domain names registered. It will only become more difficult to register a good domain as time goes on. Buying an expired domain name today could save you a lot of heartache in the future.
