A Basic Introduction to Pay Per Click Advertising

Category:  Pay Per Click

When you first start marketing on the web, it helps to first learn the very basic options you have so you can see the forest for the trees. With that in mind, here is a basic introduction to pay per click advertising.

Pay per click is an ever evolving advertising platform on the web. It has been around for as long as the web has had a strong commercial aspect. The first of the pay per click companies to dominate the market was Overture. It acted as the advertising platform for Yahoo and was eventually bought by the company.

In these modern times, there are really three major pay per click platforms available. They are Google Adwords, Yahoo ad center and MSN Live ad center. As you can probably guess, each platform provides ad space on their respective search engines. They also have affiliate agreements with other sites on the web and provide space on those as well. For instance, you can see such affiliated listings in the ads on this site.

For most web businesses, pay per click advertising is the most direct method for producing immediate traffic to a site. Once you create a campaign on any of the search engines mentioned above, it goes live within a few minutes up to a day depending on the site. Once live, the ads appear on the relevant search engines and people can click them to visit your site.

So, is pay per click the end all when it comes to online marketing? For some sites it is. For others, it is not. There are problems with click fraud where a competitor might click your ads to exhaust your advertising budget. There is also a serious lack of transparency when it comes to the platforms. They pretty much tell you the number of clicks you received and you have to believe them despite the fact it may not match what your stats program is telling you! That being said, pay per click advertising is usually your best option if you are starting a brand new site on the web.
