Rainwater promoted to copy editor
Category: Copywriting
Mary Rainwater, who has worked as a staff writer for the Herald-Press for the past six years, has been promoted to copy editor.
In her new role, Rainwater will be responsible for the layout/design of the newspaper three days a week, while other editors will pick up the remaining days of pagination. Editing stories also will be a part of her job.
“I’m really happy,” Rainwater said. “It’s always nice to be recognized for your hard work. I believe this is a good step for my career in journalism.”
Rainwater will continue to cover education news in Palestine and Anderson County as well as write features and take on general assignments.
“While I still will be writing stories, I’m also looking forward to the new challenges of designing attractive, informative newspaper editions. I have really enjoyed the layout part of the newspaper business.”
Rainwater has worn many hats in her six years at the Herald-Press. From covering school board meetings to breaking news stories to taking photos and designing pages, she has been a good sport about the diverse duties a newspaper this size offers.
“Mary has been a big asset on the layout side of the newspaper,” managing editor Angie Alvarado said. “She’s been designing pages and editing copy for a while now, so it was time to make it official.”
Her promotion was effective Feb. 3.
Rainwater graduated from the University of Texas at Tyler in May 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. After graduation, she worked for the bi-weekly Mabank Monitor where she covered three different school districts and many other spot news stories.
