Find Out IP Address Information With A Reverse Domain Name Search

Category:  Domain Names

Have you received email spam, experienced someone attempting to break into your computer´s firewall, or had someone attempt to hack into your computer system? If so, did you know that you can perform a reverse domain name search to discover the host or hostname that is associated with the host´s address or with an IP address?

A reverse domain name search, also known as a reverse DNS search, or an rDNS, can be very useful for discovering information about a person or organization that registered the domain name. However, generally speaking, the Domain Name System is used to discover which IP address is linked to a certain domain name. Therefore, a reverse domain name search provides the searcher with the host and domain name information when the searcher has an IP address.

What is an IP address? An IP address is similar to a telephone number, it consists of four number groups that range anywhere from 0 to 255, and each group is separated with a period (I.E. "1.127.240.18"). Every time a computer sends an email or accesses a website, the computer´s IP address is reported to the server.

How accurate are the results that a Reverse domain name search provides? The success of the results returned to you depends on the legitimacy of the IP address you provided. Unfortunately, people who attempt to hack into your computer or send you spam emails will use false IP addresses, which makes it difficult for them to be found.

In addition, just as there are unlisted phone numbers, there are also unlisted IP addresses. If the IP address you are looking up results in a message that says "Unable to resolve IP address", this means the IP address is unlisted.

Therefore, you need to remember that when you perform a reverse domain name search, you can´t always trust that the IP address you are looking up is the right one you need. However, this doesn´t mean that you shouldn´t attempt to conduct a reverse domain name search anyway. After all, the search is free and there is no harm in trying.
